Gratitude: Why We Give

Like all Lake and Park families, our son’s accordion file and the portfolio came home for the holiday week. Its contents are ready reminders of why we transferred to Lake and Park School in 2023. Our son, who entered Kindergarten as a Covid19 hybrid student, had learned to hate school and we were desperate for a change.

Through LnP’s alchemy of outdoors, thematic based learning, and movement, we have seen an evolution in our son’s feelings about school. From his backpack last night, chestnuts rolled onto the kitchen table, the currency of the park. Before he started at LnP, he professed a strong dislike for outdoors. Now, he is a map keeper of magical spots: the periscope tree, the Horton Hill Gargoyle drain, and the bases in the shrubs of Mt. Baker Park. He loves the the field trips. I love the single permission slip.

From his portfolio, I pulled out a sign with Perseverance spelled out in his cursive hand, the cursive he couldn’t wait to learn. From his accordion file, he pulled out the voting booklet he created during the civics study the North Room. With pride, he showed us how he had decorated it so when adorned with two pens, it looked like the underside of a B-2 bomber.

We are grateful for the teachers who see him for the kid he is and encourage his interests.

Lake and Park brought back joy and exploration through its play based curriculum. The school traditions like roller skating and Winterum helped win over our son and we are blown away by all the school has to offer for the cost. In addition, we appreciate the years of careful financial planning that allowed for the unexpected purchase of the Blue House and we want to make sure that future opportunities to perpetuate LnP can be realized. This is why we give.
